The Water Clock has 6 segments. Each segment has 5 positions.
- Completely lowered
- One quarter raised
- Two quarter raised
- Three quarter raised
- Completely raised
At the resting position, all segments completely lowered, the Meridian time is 00:00 (Midnight).
Every Meridian hour, a segment raises to the next highest position starting with segment 1. Example: At 01:00, segment 1 raises to One quarter raised; 02:00, segment 2 raises to One quarter raised; etc. Once all six segments have raised one position, it starts over again at segment 1.
At 23:00, segments 1 through 5 are Completely raised. Segment 6 will NEVER be Completely raised. At Midnight (00:00), all segments will return to Completely lowered.
To tell the time, you look for the highest segment. That is the hour.
In the example above, the Meridian time is 23:00
